Khansaheb Sykes, the UAE branch of Andrews Sykes Group PLC and the Middle East’s leading dewatering pump rental company, proudly undertook the dewatering scope for a prestigious project on Ramhan Island, Abu Dhabi, beginning on 28th May 2024. The project aimed to create an ultra-luxury community with beachfront villas, which required complex dewatering operations for the installation of a protective quay wall.
Dewatering was a critical milestone in this incredible development, and the team here at Khansaheb Sykes proved they were the best fit for the job. Deploying innovative water pump hire and dewatering pump hire solutions, we created an effective strategy tailored to the unique environmental and construction challenges of the UAE.
What Challenges Did We Face?
The project presented unique challenges due to the large-scale over-pumping requirements and the proximity to the Arabian Gulf, making precise system design essential. Additionally, the saline water conditions and the harsh climate of the UAE further complicated the operation, making our expertise even more crucial. During the initial phase, a cavity at the bottom of the basin was discovered as water levels receded.
Despite robust over-pumping efforts, the water table inside the basin stabilised due to significant water recharge, leaving the basin inaccessible and therefore hindering the progress of the project.
How Did We Solve the Problem?
Swift adaptation was key to overcoming these challenges. Although not initially part of the setup, our team introduced the use of a 12” pump to further lower the water levels.
We strategically advised the client to isolate the cavity with small bunds, allowing work to continue while the 12” pump managed the water levels. Additionally, we accelerated the deep well drilling and installation process by bringing in an additional drilling rig.
The equipment we used included:
Over-Pumping Setup
The over-pumping set up using our pump hire units was essential for managing large volumes of water during the dewatering process. The larger pumps were used for quick water removal, and the smaller pumps were used for precision and flexibility in challenging areas. The units used included:
- 9 x GP200M (8”) pumps
- 15 x GP150M (6”) pumps
- 1 x GP pump (12”)
Deep Well System:
As a critical component of the strategy using our dewatering pump hire, the deep well system was designed to effectively address groundwater issues, a common challenge in the UAE. The borehole pumps were used to extract water from significant depths, and the generators were deployed to provide a reliable power supply.
- 80 x borehole pumps (4kW & 5.5kW)
- 16 x 250kVA generators
The Results
As a result of our dewatering solutions using our water pump rental units, the water levels within the basin were successfully lowered, making the site accessible for further construction activities. Our rapid response and proactive approach ensured that the project remained on track and aligned with the client’s expectations and contributing to the continued growth of Abu Dhabi as a premier luxury destination.
As a result of this achievement, Khansaheb Sykes has also been awarded a new dewatering subcontract for stormwater line installation at Yas Bay Beach in Abu Dhabi. This is a project we’re thrilled to accept and represents another opportunity for us to showcase our expertise and deliver truly exceptional results.
We’re eager to apply our proven solutions to ensure the success of this new venture, continuing our commitment to excellence in every aspect of our work.
