About Andrews Sykes

Our History (1857 - 2026)

Khansaheb Sykes was set up in 1976 following our involvement with Costain International on the Shindegah Tunnel Crossing of the Dubai Creek. As a joint venture with Khansaheb Civil Engineering L.L.C., Khansaheb Sykes was created as a specialised dewatering contractor and pumping equipment supplier for building, construction and petrochemical operations together with water companies and local municipalities, we have been involved with dewatering of major infrastructure projects including Jebel Ali Port and Dubai Dry Docks.

Henry Sykes LTD is founded

35 year old Henry Sykes came to London from Sheffield and established a small engineering business in Upper Thames Street. From his workshop, Henry Sykes was embarking on a journey that would see his company working on many of the Thames’ most high profile pumping schemes of the late 19th century.

Bankside 66

The business transferred to the more prestigious location of 66 Bankside, Southwark, and began construction of the deep well pumps with which Sykes’ name was to become closely associated. Here he produced Portable Vertical Steam Engines, Portable Engines and Boilers, Friction Hoists and Pumps.

Founder Henry Sykes dies and his wife, Margaret Sykes, takes over the business.

1885
Edmund Jackson

Henry Sykes Jr, first son of Henry Sykes, takes control of the firm and introduces cousin Edmund Jackson into the business. For the next 40 years, Jackson contributed heavily to the business. Having a flair for mechanical design, Jackson would go on to design highly successful machines such as Pile-driving Winches, Contractors pumps, and the Tripulse - a three throw bucket pump.

A premises, with river frontage and wharf, were required for the making of new substantial works into the business. The 66 Bankside premises became the headquarters from which all the business was conducted.

World War I

Henry Sykes Ltd created machinery that would see England win against their enemies in the war. They designed and built special rolling-friction winches which were used for a large number of ‘Kite Balloons’ in the war. This portable winding gear ensured we could observe the position of enemies' artillery and troop formations.

Expansion to the Greenwich Marshes

Henry Sykes Ltd bought 51 acres of land on the Greenwich marshes adjoining the Woolwich road at Charlton. Extensions and additions have been made from time to time to meet with the expanding business over the years.

Ford Motors
Ford Motors

Sykes plant helps to build the foundations of the site of Ford’s great motor works on the marshes in Dagenham, Essex. Sykes drove tens of thousands of reinforced concrete piles on which the whole of this world-famous factory was built.

Khansaheb Civil Engineering LLC

Khansaheb Civil Engineering LLC was founded by Khansaheb Hussain bin Hassan Amad. A local family-owned Construction business based in Dubai but serving customers throughout the United Arab Emirates that will become our first local contractor in the UAE.

World War II

At the outbreak of the second world war, the company provided a large number of winches for the erection of steel masts at points on the East and South coasts. Unknown to Henry Sykes at the time, they were to become the Radar installations that contributed heavily to our country's survival.

Impact of the Second World War

Being based in London, Sykes were very much affected by the second world war as many of their men were called out for service, those who remained had to attend work 24 hours a day to protect the business in case of incendiary bomb attacks.

Mulberry Harbours

Sykes Pumps plays a crucial part in Operation Overload and D-Day. When the MOD pumps failed to raise the sunken caissons, Sykes’ Pumps were quickly collected and used. Without the pumps, the Mulberry Harbours would not have floated. The Mulberry Harbours was one of the greatest engineering accomplishments of the second world war.

Centenary Year

In 1957, Sykes Pumps reached their one hundred year anniversary of continuous operation. In celebration of this milestone the company produced a centenary brochure, describing the evolution of Andrews Sykes into the UK’s leading hire specialist. New Univac Pump

Henry Sykes reconstructs a new modern design facility in the Southwark offices. The company introduces its latest major development, the ‘Univac’ pump. This pump was evolved by adapting the priming arrangements used in the De-watering pump to Unchokeable pumps. This pump achieved great success and many pumping problems previously considered as verging on the impossible are now satisfactorily dealt with.

Many of the units manufactured in the 1960s are still in working order today – one of which being Nessie - a Sykes portable steam engine which was used during World War I

Univac-pump

Sykes Pumps revolutionises pumping by introducing a fleet of self priming pumps called Univac. These pumps work as portable driven diesel pumps and overcome the toughest and most technically difficult applications in any industry.

Sykes in the Middle East

Sykes Pumps takes business to Middle East for the first time merging with Khansaheb Civil Engineering L.L.C to become Khansaheb Sykes. A depot is opened in the United Arab Emirates in Sharjah. The lower ground water table of the country proves ideal for Sykes Pumps as they have the best experts in the country specialising in dewatering solutions.

In the same year, Oasis Sykes opened in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Specialising in dewatering, Oasis Sykes is today known as Sykes Dewatering whilst the depot in Dubai is known as Khansaheb Sykes Dewatering.

Sykes Submersibles

Being one of the only companies to bring submersible pumps into the pumping industry, they proved to be a hit. Ideal for dewatering at all kind of sites, the Submersible pump changed the way pumping worked forever. Growing from strength to strength, Submersible pumps now have their own division within the business called ‘Sykes Submersibles’.

Sykes Pumps flourishes in the Emirates and another depot is opened in Abu Dhabi. This depot is dedicated to dewatering contracts in the city.

Khansaheb Sykes was created as a specialised dewatering contractor and pumping equipment supplier for building, construction and petrochemical operations together with water companies and local municipalities, we have been involved with dewatering of major infrastructure projects including Jebel Ali Port and Dubai Dry Docks.

Khansaheb Sykes commenced work on the landmark Mall of the Emirates development. As part of the early-stage enabling works, specialist groundwork and dewatering support were undertaken to manage groundwater levels and prepare the site for large-scale structural construction.

Yas Island & Al Salam Tunnel Projects
Yas Island & Al Salam Tunnel Projects

Khansaheb Sykes deployed deep well dewatering systems to manage challenging groundwater conditions during the large-scale infrastructure works on Yas Island. In the same period, the company delivered extensive dewatering works for the Al Salam Tunnel (Contract 3) intersection near Khalifa Park in Abu Dhabi, installing more than 150 deep wells to facilitate construction below the water table.

Khansaheb Sykes delivered a comprehensive dewatering solution to support major infrastructure works in Dubai, designing and installing a tailored system to manage high groundwater levels and maintain dry, stable excavation conditions. The scheme incorporated strategically positioned deep wells and high-capacity pumping equipment to ensure continuous groundwater control throughout the construction phase.

Hassyan Power Station Project in Dubai

Khansaheb Sykes delivered a comprehensive dewatering solution for the Hassyan Power Station project in Dubai, supporting the construction of this major energy infrastructure development. The works involved the design, installation and operation of a deep well dewatering system to control groundwater levels and maintain dry, stable excavation conditions across the site. Operating within a coastal environment with challenging ground conditions, the scheme demonstrated the company’s capability to manage large-scale, technically demanding dewatering projects for critical utility facilities.

Khansaheb Sykes Supplies Pumps to the Philippines

Out team of dedicated engineers supplied specialist dewatering pumps to a customer in the Philippines, supporting infrastructure and water management requirements overseas. The project involved the provision of high-performance Sykes pumping equipment tailored to local operating conditions, demonstrating the adaptability and export capability of the company’s fleet.

Rapid Response

Sykes Pumps introduce a new concept in emergency pumping by unveiling our revolutionary Rapid Response unit. The main feature of our latest innovation is its lightweight frame which allows it to be legally towed by vans and other medium sized vehicles. Although small and compact in size, the pumps deliver users huge performance that facilitates the pumping of up to 130,000 litres per hour

Khansaheb Sykes supplied specialist dewatering pumps to support humanitarian and development initiatives in Yemen through a partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The equipment was deployed to help restore and maintain critical water and sanitation infrastructure in areas affected by conflict, ensuring reliable groundwater control and improved access to essential services.

Record-Breaking Port Operation (nearly 100 pumps in Abu Dhabi)

We delivered one of its largest dewatering operations in the region, deploying nearly 100 pumps to support a time-critical port inlet excavation project in Abu Dhabi. The scheme was initially mobilised with 60 units, with a further 30 pumps rapidly installed as project demands increased, ensuring uninterrupted groundwater control and programme continuity.

Khansaheb Syke introduced the Hydraset range, an advanced pumping system engineered for high-head and long-distance water transfer applications. Designed to improve operational efficiency, the Hydraset system combines a hydraulic submersible pump with a surface-mounted power pack, enabling suction lifts beyond conventional limits while reducing fuel consumption and overall running costs.

Andrews Ventilation

Andrews Ventilation provides an extensive range of portable cooling, extraction and ventilation fans for hire. Our ASF cooling fans are often used to provide fresh air and comfort cooling in environments such as offices, warehouses, gymnasiums, shops, factories, airports and events. The FV range of ventilation and extraction fans are commonly used for more industrial applications. When used for extraction, they can remove dangerous odours from the workspace including paint vapours, dust, welding fumes and carbon monoxide.

In ventilation applications, they provide fresh air to confined spaces or areas with restricted access. In recent year we have also added high capacity fans for use in tunnels and have complemented the range with dust filters, ducting and specialist accessories.

Andrews Boiler Hire

Andrews Boilers is the UK’s number one supplier of boiler hire services. We provide bespoke solutions to cover every possible situation in the provision of hot water and heating. We have mobile packaged boilers between 100kW and 1,500kW in capacity. CCS provide bespoke and tailored contingency solutions for cooling, heating and pumping systems, ranging from a simple risk assessment or contingency plan to a full emergency standby system. Andrews Sykes BV was established in 1971 and has grown to provide a comprehensive regional coverage of the Netherlands through four strategically placed depots. Today, as part of Europe’s leading specialist climate hire group, Andrews Sykes BV provide a full range of portable climate hire solutions for, construction sites, industrial locations, retail outlets, banks, server rooms, telecommunication operators, corporate events organisers, facilities managers and many more.

Our expertise and experience have enabled Andrews Sykes BV to become market leaders in Holland, for air conditioning, ventilation, heating, dehumidification, boiler and chiller hire. Our engineers based from depots in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Hoogeveen provide our Dutch clients with a genuine 24/7/365 service.

Switzerland

Andrews Sykes offers portable climate control equipment hire solutions in the Romande part of Switzerland via our subsidiary Climat Location SA. No matter what the demand, whether it is for urgent hire for extreme temperature control, to replace existing equipment due to break down or for a planned maintenance shut down, we have a team of experts ready to respond, select, and deliver the ideal hire equipment, for either short or long term hire.

Our first Swiss depot was opened in 2013 and is located between Geneva and Lausanne in order to provide a fast response throughout the French speaking Cantons.

Ireland

Andrews Sykes work closely with our local distributor Aska Sykes Ltd throughout Ireland. For more than 15 years, Aska Sykes have provided pumping and climate hire solutions to over 3000 customers in Ireland. They offer a nationwide coverage from depots located in Dublin, Carlow, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Lisburn and Belfast. Just like Andrews Sykes, they hire and sell pumps, boilers, heaters, chillers and portable air conditioners as well as supplying accessories for all equipment.

Belgium

Andrews Sykes BVBA, based in Brussels and Antwerpen, offers the complete range of Andrews Sykes climate hire services to the Belgian market. Our distribution and service structure allows us to offer a fast and effective service across the whole country. Our staff, literature and website have both French and Flemish languages. With more than 50 years’ experience in the Benelux region we provide dedicated specialist local expertise to our customers for the hire of air conditioning, heating, chillers, boilers and ventilation.

Andrews Sykes BVBA hold central stocks of hire equipment to ensure we can match a broad range of cooling, heating, ventilation and dehumidification solutions for both comfort temperature control and a wide range of industrial processes.

Italy

Nolo Climat Srl is the Andrews Sykes Italian climate rental operation. This business opened in 2011 and has grown significantly in recent years to become a market leader in the hire of air conditioning, heaters, dehumidification, chillers and boilers in Northern Italy. The first depot was opened in Milan and quickly doubled in size. This depot proved to be the ideal location to cover Italy’s second city and the Lombardy region, with the easy access to the motorway network, our coverage has extended and has led to further growth throughout the country.

In 2017, we opened a second depot in Bologna in order to accommodate the growing demand for our products and services. The Group chose Italy as a base for its strategic expansion after enjoying strong manufacturing links with the country for over 20 years and this has assisted the business in becoming a leading authority for Chiller hire in a very short period of time.

Following a substantial increase in business activity across northern Italy, a third depot was opened – this time in Verona – during the first half of 2021. By the end of the year, a separate pumps microsite was created for our Italian business after a product diversification preceded the subsequent launch of our Noleggia Pompe subsidiary.

Luxembourg

Following our success in Belgium and Holland we have extended our coverage into Luxembourg with the opening of a new operation, Andrews Sykes Climat Location srl, in 2013. This business works closely with our Belgian operation to provide the full range of Andrews Sykes climate rental products across the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

France

Andrews Sykes have been working with our customers in France for many years and in 2012 opened our French subsidiary company, Andrews Sykes Climat Location SAS. The first branch of our French business was opened in Lille; a location specifically chosen because the city’s busy commercial activity. Our expansion into this region enabled us to offer Northern France a full range of climate hire products, including air conditioners, heaters, dehumidifiers, chillers and boilers.

In 2014, we added a second depot in Paris in order to accommodate the growing demand for our services from within the capital City. Since then, our Paris base has undergone significant expansion and is now twice the size of the original building. Following an incredibly successful period, it was decided that additional space would be needed to store an increased hire fleet and house extra employees who have since joined the company.

A third depot was then opened in 2015 and a fourth in 2018, with Andrews Sykes Climat Location adding Lyon and Marseille to the list of major French cities we can claim to have a strong presence in. The choice of these cities also allows us to provide a comprehensive climate hire service throughout the South, South-East and South-West of France.

In 2020, we opened a fifth depot, in Toulouse, to better accommodate our customers across the southwest of France. The summer of 2020 saw us open a sixth depot in France – this time in Nantes – giving us excellent local coverage of the Great West region.

The Middle East

UAE

Khansaheb Sykes LLC is the UAE market leader in dewatering solutions and pump hire. With over 100 dedicated employees operating from branches in Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, no other provider in the UAE has as much local pump hire experience in deep well dewatering, groundwater control and specialist pump hire solutions. Both pump hire and pump sales are available including diesel centrifugal pumps and bore hole deep well pumps.

Khansaheb Sykes was originally set up in 1975 in the United Arab Emirates, following involvement on the Shindegah Tunnel Crossing of the Dubai Creek. As a joint venture with Khansaheb Civil Engineering L.L.C., Khansaheb Sykes was created as a specialised dewatering contractor and pumping equipment supplier for building, construction and petrochemical operations together with water companies and local municipalities. Since then, we have been involved in all major infrastructure projects such as the prestigious Jebel Ali Port and Dubai Dry Docks.

In 2012 we opened our UAE climate hire operation, Andrews Sykes Climate Rental LLC to provide air conditioning hire and chiller hire products throughout the Middle East. We provide temporary cooling solutions to a very wide and diverse selection of clients including hotels, events, construction, utilities, gas and oil, transportation, manufacturing and many more. With units ranging from 2 kw mobile coolers to multi mega-watt packages we can provide solutions for small offices up to district cooling applications.

In 2020, we added an additional depot location in Dubai following a substantial investment in our Middle Eastern operations.

Sykes Pumps have been active in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for more than 30 years. In 2013 we decided to set up a new operation to focus on dewatering hire applications throughout the Eastern Region. With the huge volume of construction projects and high water tables the region offer great opportunities for our products and services, Andrews Sykes Pumps Saudi Arabia is planned to operational during 2014.

Jean-Jacques Murray – Chairman

Age 59

Jean-Jacques Murray was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in December 1994, becoming Vice-Chairman in February 2007, Non-Executive Chairman in June 2023 and Executive Chairman in February 2024. Mr Murray leads the Board and is responsible for setting its agenda, defines its approach to corporate governance and ensures its effectiveness, he is also Chairman of the Boards remuneration committee.

Mr Murray graduated with a BA in Finance from Los Angeles Pepperdine University in 1988 and obtained his Masters Degree in 1990. He is non-executive vice chairman of London Security plc, Nu-Swift Ltd, and Ansul S.A.

Marie-Claire Leon – Non-Executive Director

Age 62

Marie-Claire Leon was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in February 2007. She has served as an assistant to Jacques Gaston Murray since 1999 and is responsible for overseeing various projects around the world on his behalf.

Ms Leon graduated from California State University in 1988 with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration, with a particular focus on Marketing Management, New Venture and Small Business Management. Ms. Leon is also a non-executive director of London Security Plc.

Xavier Mignolet – Non-Executive Director

Xavier Mignolet was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in February 2007.

Mr Mignolet graduated with a Masters Degree in Commercial and Financial Sciences at HEC In Liege Belgium in 1987. Having started his career in financial audit for PWC in Brussels, he then became Financial Director for the Ansul Group. Mr Mignolet is also managing director of London Security plc, and is a director of Ansul S.A. and Importex S.A.

Emmanuel David Olivier Adrien Sebag – Non-Executive Director

Emmanuel Sebag was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in February 1997.

Mr Sebag graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1991 with a Masters in Industrial Administration. Mr Sebag is an executive director of London Security plc.

Jean-Pierre Murray was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in August 2008 and appointed as Non-Executive Vice-Chairman in February 2024. He is also a non-executive director of London Security plc.

Mr Murray graduated from Los Angeles Pepperdine University in 1990 with a BA in Finance, and gained his Masters degree in Business in 1993.

Andrew James Kitchingman – Independent Non-Executive Director

Age 61

Andrew Kitchingman was appointed to the Board as an Independent Non-Executive Director in July 2018. He is chairman of the audit committee and a member remuneration committee of the Board.

Mr Kitchingman is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) and graduated in 1985 with a BSc in Mathematics from Kings College, University of London. He is a director of a number of companies, including the non-executive chairman of Mpac Group plc and the non-executive chairman of HC Slingsby plc, both companies with its shares admitted to trading on the AIM Market of the London Stock Exchange. Mr Kitchingman is Non-executive director of London Security plc. Mr Kitchingman was previously a non-executive director of MORhomes PLC, Lonpro Holdings PLC, Incommunities Group Limited and a director of the Cathedral Choir School Ripon Limited.
