Sewage Over pumping – specialist solution from Khansaheb Sykes

Khansaheb Sykes were able to assist a key contractor on the Prestigious Yas Island (Abu Dhabi) by overcoming a challenging over-pumping application. This was to control the flow of ‘Dirty Water’ from within a fully operational sewer network during essential refurbishment.

With deep manholes and a high flow rate of over 600m3/hr of ‘Dirty Water’, Khansasheb Sykes had to mobilise a more specialist solution to assist this client as a conventional diesel unit could not achieve the required flow and head on this occasion.

Khansaheb Sykes utilised one of their KE203 8inch Sewage Submersibles to extract the dirty water from the open chamber and pump directly back into the Sewer Network 600m away via a network of 8inch Pvc delivery hoses.

With continued attention on environmental issues such as sound, fuel spillage and emissions, this electric pump used was ideal for this application. As an additional precaution against electric power failure however, a Sykes GP200 (8inch) diesel pump was also connected into the suction line for essential backup.

When a key customer in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi contacted Khansaheb Sykes to devise a solution for the over pumping of ‘dirty water’ from a major operational sewer network, we were only too pleased to apply our pumping and application expertise to assist them.

The customer required a specialist hire pump to over-pump sewage from a large operational sewage system to enable essential maintenance work to be carried out (but without disruption to critical waste water services). Within this application, Khansaheb Sykes had to supply and install a specialist submersible sewage pump which could be submerged to a very deep level and yet still achieve a high flow rate of over 3000m3/hr of dirty water.

In order to meet the tight project deadline, Khansaheb Sykes flew 5 of their new KE203 8” Sewage Submersible Pumps on an overnight carrier from the UK to extract the dirty water out of the open chamber and pump directly back into the Sewer Network some 500m away. With the additional focus on complying with essential environmental requirements such as low sound pollution, avoidance of fuel spillage, and minimizing exhaust emissions, these new sewage submersible pumps within the industry leading Khansaheb Sykes pump hire fleet were ideal for this job.

These additional pumps within the Khansaheb Sykes sewage pumps range are smooth running and vibration free. Built from ductile cast iron, these hard wearing, precision machined pumps work to maximum hydraulic efficiency and due to their modular design, are very inexpensive to maintain, and assure long trouble free performance for our customers. The submersible sewage pump ranges from 80mm to 300mm pumping diameter.

The amount of material Khansaheb Sykes Submersible Sewage Pumps can move depends on the pump size, the material type, the addition of an impeller, and the particular application.

Two types of impeller are available: channel and vortex.

Two and three- channel impellers have considerable larger channels than standard closed impellers but the same high efficiencies. Single-channel impellers have larger free-passage combined with a low power consumption.

Vortex impellers are selected for applications handling stringy solids within the pumped liquid, or for pumping sludge with a high solids concentration.  A vortex impeller creates a whirlpool or vortex inside the pump volute.  As a result, the larger solids pass through this vortex rather than through the impeller.

Currently the Khansaheb Sykes submersible sewage pumps are deployed across many different projects across the UAE supporting the needs of different contractors.

Khansaheb Sykes bid a fond farewell

Khansaheb Sykes the UAE’s leading Dewatering and Ground Water Control Specialist bid a fond farewell to Mr Abdul Ahad who after a rewarding and fulfilling career of over 31 years within Khansaheb Sykes primarily as a Wellpoint Operative has decided to take retirement and relocate back to his homeland in India.

Mr. Ahad has played an important role in the day-to-day operations of Khansaheb Sykes wellpoint dewatering division and shown great diligence and commitment to his work as a dewatering operative.  He has been an integral part in the Khansaheb Sykes’s success in wellpoint dewatering within UAE over the last three decades – also teaching those around him how to install well point systems efficiently and for maximum effectiveness.

Having successfully over-pumped sewage manholes on the prestigious Yas Island development in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Khansaheb Sykes’ expertise was once again called upon by the same Client.  This time, the challenge was to over-pump a series of larger sewage manholes operating at depths of over 14 m requiring a discharge flow rate of over 500m3/hr.   Khansaheb Sykes immediately put the new addition of Sewage Submersible Pump to work, ensuring that this valued client received a professional and rapid solution to what would ordinarily have been a difficult problem to overcome.

Recovery of water logged construction site

Khansaheb Sykes were recently contacted to offer an urgent solution for the ingress of groundwater entering an already excavated site through its shoring walls.  Dewatering of this site was already taking place, however, the current provider could not deliver the specialist solution required for the additional nuisance water.  The customer contacted Khanshaeb Sykes with almost 40 years experience of dewatering sites within the Middle East – asking us to urgently take over the dewatering activities and to deliver a ‘Dry site’ for its safe and productive development.

In this case our engineers implemented a ‘French Drain’ system in order to control the additional ingress of water.  Drains were excavated along the shoring wall with spurs coming off, thereby ensuring that all the groundwater was controlled and discharged rapidly and efficiently through the Submersible Pump located within the Deep Wells.

A ‘French drain’, is a trench or excavation which is covered with gravel allowing the surface and groundwater to be redirected away from a specific area.  A French drain can also have perforated hollow pipes located along the bottom to quickly extract water that seeps through the upper gravel layer.  French drains are common drainage systems, primarily used to prevent excessive ground and surface water from penetrating or damaging expensive foundation works.
